Planning a family day out in the community can be challenging for parents and carers raising children with disability. It takes time to find the right location for your outing, somewhere your child can fully participate and enjoy the day. We understand that one of the most important factors to consider for this is access to a suitable bathroom.
The ‘gold standard’ when it comes to accessible bathrooms are Changing Places. These are government-funded toilet and change facilities designed to assist people with disability and high support needs, ensuring that they can take part in all aspects of community life without having to worry about cutting their time short to access a suitable bathroom.
The Kiind team have put together a guide for everything you need to know about Changing Places, keep reading to find out more.
What’s included in these Changing Places?
All Changing Places are outfitted with the following:
- A height-adjustable adult-sized change table
- A constant-charging ceiling track hoist system
- A centrally located peninsula toilet
- Additional circulation space more than standard accessible toilets
- An automatic door with a clear opening of 950mm at a minimum
- A privacy screen
Many of the Changing Places facilities in WA are also equipped with showers. You can find out which ones through the interactive map on the official Changing Places website.
How do you access a Changing Places facility?
To access one of these facilities, you’ll need to purchase a Master Locksmiths Access Key (MLAK) for $25. Click here to order one.
An MLAK enables people with disability to gain 24/7 access to a network of public facilities, including Changing Places and other accessible toilets, public elevators, the Liberty Swing, and more.
The MLAK locking system ensures that the Changing Places stay safe and secure when not in use and are readily available to those who need them.
How can I find a Changing Place?
More than 30 Changing Places are located across Western Australia, all of which are marked on The National Public Toilet Map and the Changing Places official website. Both interactive maps allow you to quickly find the closest Changing Places facility relative to your current location.
Some family-friendly locations with Changing Places include:
- Kings Park (Kulbardi Car Park)
- Pia’s Place Playground
- Elizabeth Quay
- Rottnest Island (behind Dome Cafe)
- Jo Wheatley All Abilities Play Space
- Geraldton Foreshore
- Koombana Foreshore (Bunbury)
- Yagan Square
- Broome Aquatica Centre
- Mandurah Visitor Centre
- And many more!
The Australian Government have committed to invest over $3 million to provide more accessible bathrooms across the country including 11 news ones in WA, so in time more locations will be available for people with disability.
